how direct show developers, deal testing of multiple capture source formats?

i need test various formats of input, such rgb24 (web cam), dv, mpeg4.

i can achieve connecting variety of capture hardware development computer , examining output , filter graph, potentially requires me have lot of hardware, there has better way?

i have seen virtual webcams provide capture source filter give no control on output format.

is there virtual capture device allow testing of multiple capture formats without purchase of multiple hardware or there dedicated hardware capture source used testing provides configurable , multiple formats?
