Eclipse returns error message "Java was started but returned exit code = 1" -

i downloaded , dearchived android sdk windows. i`m using w8 64x.

the error message points problem java version. have jdk installed?

try adding following (noting new line):

-vm  c:/wherever/java/jdk1.6.0_21/jre/bin/server/jvm.dll

...to eclipse.ini file, pointing jdk want use, , check required java version @ least new jdk. path windows system. more on paths can found here (scroll down).

edit: make sure, -vm option occurs before -vmargs command. after -vmargs passed directly jvm.

if don't know eclipse.ini file is: regularly in folder of eclipse.exe.

edit2: @kadolakatt: reason why installing latest java version worked because eclipse checks standard path jvm if doesn't find -vm entry (see here). i'd not recommend that, since might wrong guessing jvm used. if update java (automatically?) might run problems in eclipse wondering might have changed. better set specific folder in eclipse.ini certain.
